SULAIMANIYAH GREAT MOSQUE, HISTORICAL HERITAGE OF SERDANG SULTANATE

We still can find the historical heritage of Serdang until now in Perbaungan, Serdang Bedagai District, in example Sulaimaniyah Mosque. This mosque used to be near the Sultanate palace of Serdang: Darul Arif palace in Kota Galuh Village. Unfortunately the palace has completely vanished. This mosque is situated in Kota Galuh Village, Perbaungan District on the side of the street. Everybody going from Medan to Tebing Tinggi will pass over this mosque. Every day, the mosque becomes a place for the travelers to take a rest, do prayers while doing the religious tourism to see the mosque left by Serdang Sultanate. Moreover, on Friday prayer, the mosque almost can’t bear the people praying there. According to the historical note written largely on the walls of the mosque, is stated that the Great Mosque Sulaimaniyah was built by Serdang Sultan, Syariful Alamsyah in 1894 as the capital of Sultanate was moved from Rantau Panjang (now it is in Pantai Labu District, Deli Serdang Regency) to the City Palace of Galuh Perbaungan (used to be Serdang).

This mosque has ever been renovated several times with the help of the former President of Indonesia Megawati Soekarnoputri, the Governor of North Sumatra (the late) Rizal Nurdin and the General Secretary of Indonesia’s Health Department Dr. Safii Ahmad MPH. The building itself is not too unique, looks like the typical Malay architecture. At a glance, it is not different from the others. But this mosque has its own characteristics. The roof of its terrace is shaped like a pyramid. Inside the mosque, there are four large pillars supporting the building with a luxurious ornamental lamp in the center of its ceiling surrounded by Quran’s verses calligraphy telling about praying. The Malay characteristics can be seen from its yellow MIMBAR with four steps covered with a green mat and on the MIMBAR, there is dome using the symbol of half moon and stars. The ceramics terrace is supported by some small poles with tens of lamps in various sizes surrounding the left and the back terrace. It is also equipped with lavatory and a place for wudhu. The visitors can also see the grave of Serdang Sultan Sulaiman Syariful Alamsyah and his family as well as the important Sultanate officials in front of the mosque. SULAIMANIYAH PANTAI CERMIN MOSQUE

With the same name because it was built by the same person, Sulaimaniyah Great Mosque in Pantai Cermin Kanan Village, Pantai Cermin District, was built in 1901. It means the mosque is 105 years old. This mosque has an impression of a historical old building although there are some parts which have been renovated. With four supporting pillars inside the mosque, there is a ladder toward the upper part of mosque as a place for doing tawajjuh. The outside pillars are unique and appear to be the characteristics of every mosque in Pantai Cermin District. They are round and form a circle until the upper part of the pillar. SUMATRA’S HERITAGE: ISMAILIYAH MOSQUE

The local communities know it as the palace mosque, the heritage of Tengku Haji Ismail Sulung Laut, The King of Bedagai. The mosque still stands firmly until now. Similar with the other mosques around the Malay coastal area, Jamik Ismailiyah Mosque, located in Pekan Village, Tanjung Teringin District, is full of Malay atmosphere. This mosque was built in 1882 by The King of Bedagai at that time, Tengku Ismail Sulung Laut. After building the mosque, Sulung Laut built a palace beside it and finished in 1898. Since the palace was higher, Sulung Laut raised the mosque. In 1937, the mosque was renovated. Its ceramic tiles were replaced with zinc. Last in 1982, the mosque was renovated again. Its iron pillars were changed into cement, a tower was built, and a gate was made, and adorned with “kelumai” (a yellow triangular ornament coning downward and put on the roof’s side).

Some parts remain original, such as the mimbar khutbah. This wooden mimbar still looks strong. The ornamental carving shows typical Malay characteristics, especially it was gold painted and combined with contrast black. This mimbar is 2 meters high. The backyard was made a graveyard for the royal family and officials like the graves of the three Bedagai Kings, Tengku Ismail Sulung Laut, Tengku Rahmat Bendahara Putra Raja (the son of Sulung Laut) and Tengku Zainarrasyid Pangeran Nara Kelana (the son of Sulung Laut). Sulung Laut died on 21 March 1914, Tengku Rahmat on 2 December 1905 and Tengku Zainarrasyid on 12 October 1932. There are also the graves of the Royal officials and priests such as Datuk Perdana and Datuk Setia, the grave of Panglima Daud and Datuk Sri Amar Asmara as well as Syekh Haji Ibrahim. On the back part of the mosque, we can see the original face of the mosque because it doesn’t undergo the renovation, only its stalls are replaced. On the pillars, on the right and on the left side of the mosque are written the names of Allah and Mohammed. The terrace and the natural stones which become the terrace also look original.
